How I Turned My Damaged Hair Into Long and Healthy

long-hair-in-sunlight

Long hair, much care!
Puno kose, puno brige!

I have had long hair since I remember, but started taking actual care about it in high school, when I was having mere sparkles of interest in cosmetics. Throughout the years, it escalated to the point where my bathroom was completely hoarded with various shampoos and masks, and shelves with oils and treatments. And I have always wanted to have naturally blonde hair, but oh the agony, how to be a natural blonde when you’re a brunette! I didn’t want to dye it because not only I was afraid of damaging it, and because how horrible would a super dark outgrowth look like, but also because who would have the money to finance all those trips to the hairdresser!

Goldilocks – but at what price?

Having different dying techniques like balayage and highlights become popular, I decided to go for a more natural approach to get my hair lighter, for which I just didn’t feel like paying €100 in a super famous hair salon. (I even went to get consulted in a well-known hair salon in Zagreb, but their offered price just shocked me because it even reached the fourth figure. I don’t know, do they soak my hair in liquid gold, or what?) So I gave the job to my local (and cheaper) hair dresser – and after that I started noticing how my hair became horribly entangled, especially in the neck area, but also anywhere else, in almost random places.

To cut – or not to cut?

In that time, I was already several years deep into sulphate- and silicone-free hair care, and that was something in which I was persistent and actually happy with throughout my whole university. The logic was then (but It kind of remained today) that I would prefer to nourish my hair with good products rather than just coat it with synthetic layers of silicones. I mean, I wanted to take good care of it instead of just masking it with god-knows-what to look good on the outside and in the same time to have it in an awful state from the inside. However, I questioned this opinion when I would regularly cry while combing my hair: I don’t know if the physical or the psychological pain was worse. Every day, for weeks and months, I would spend hours and hours only to comb it, only to start it all over again in the morning. It was like one big Gordian knot, like I was sleeping in a bed of chewing gums, and my hair would crumble into thousand pieces with each brush stroke. I can’t depict that desperation to you, nothing looked like helping, not even two long hair brushing a day, tying it in a bun overnight, or regular conditioning after every shampooing, and in that desperation I was even considering to purchase those too expensive hair salon products; just no to be so miserable anymore. To cut it was just a theoretical option – should I give up on something I had nourished for so long – but then again could I continue like that?

And the winner is…?

My first desperate move was to enter in the first random store I found when I thought I couldn’t bear with it anymore. (Yup, I was looking for a miraculous hair mask on shelves right next to the “frozen chicken wrapped in plastic foil” department.) Since I still wasn’t ready to blindly give hundreds of euros, drugstore products with silicones (which is around 95% of all hair products I guess) seemed like a good test whether this oh-so-avoided ingredient could help me save my hair and nerves. I turned almost every mask and every treatment on the shelves of that supermarket, and all that jut to find something that could offer something more nourishing to my hair than just mere silicone coating. Luckily for me (and I am so grateful to heavens for it), I picked up the L’Oréal Elseve Total Repair 5 hair mask, which among the other things offered amino acids and ceramides, meaning care both on the inside as well as on the outside, with a minimal amount of silicones. How exactly is that? Well, 2-oleamido-1,3-octadecanediol replenishes the internal hair cuticle oil, while the aminoacids and hydrolysed wheat proteins fill in and patch up the surface of hair strands which lack keratin, thus making them stronger. Ceramides are most useful in chemically damaged hair so this mask seemed to be a good choice for me to start with.

Saved!

Little did I know the this mask will become my life saviour! I can tell you that after just two uses my hair became significantly softer and less tangly, and after four it felt like I had my “old hair back”. A really good and priceless feeling 🙂 I continued tying it into a bun or a braid overnight, which is something that I have been doing for years now in order to make my hair less greasy over the week, and even less tangled ass well. In the morning I just let it down and with a minimum amount of combing it is ready to win the day!

Planned to try next

I have to admit I am really glad to have found a drugstore solution. If I would be feeling really splurgy, just to treat myself, I think I would go for one of the Macadamia Oil, Moroccanoil or Kerastase Masque Therapique products. The latter one, according to its ingredients list, seems to be stuffed with silicones, and just at the end has six amino acids and something else, so I have a feeling it might be too heavy – or at least a bit overpriced (maybe I’m wrong?) Just recently I have seen and bought the new L’Oréal Elseve Total Repair Extreme mask in a drugstore in Zagreb, which is very similar by its ingredients to the Total Repair 5 one, but with little less silicones. Hoping to have even better hair with it 🙂 With this, I plan to try and see how my hair will react if I introduce just a little bit of silicones in masks, and the best option with nourishing oil will be Avon Advance Techniques Moroccan Organ Oil mask* for all hair types.

Maske u planu

Hair brush

I think that all my life I have used the most ordinary hair brushes from a local store, with sparse and plastic bristles, and that was just fine until it started become awfully tangled. Then I saw a Tangle Teezer stand at the Edinburgh airport, and just decide to go ahead and buy a golden version of the travel-sized brushes for £15. The same day upon disembarking I threw my old brush straight to the trash. At the time, since my hair was super prone to tangling, I thought I didn’t get anything by switching to this type of a brush – but now when I look back I’m glad I did because I don’t have the slightest idea how I would survive all this agony with my old hair brush, completely unadjusted to my problems.

Shampoo

For a long time I have had dandruff problems, and it’s been years now. In the meantime I have tried many products, mainly in the shape of anti-dandruff shampoos. Some of them were sulphate-free, some with plant extracts, but nothing in the end has helped me as much as the good old Head&Shoulders. During my puberty, our relationship was constantly on-and-off, basically variating as much as my hormones in that age, but now I rely on it so much I buy it every time I go shopping.

Dry shampoo

Now, dry shampooing is not the best thing to do either to your scalp either to your hair, but due to our modern way of living I like to keep one close, for just when I really need it. For example, I come home late from a trip and I have to get up really early the next day, but I barely have the energy to even throw myself on the bed, let alone wash and blow-dry such long hair. However, even then I use as little as possible, just to fix it till the next hair wash, which would usually be tomorrow. For these purposes and after trying out many brands I like to stick to Batiste or make mine myself at home.

Heat exposure

In general I avoid blow-drying as much as I can and I like to leave it to dry naturally. As far as any hair styling goes, like flat irons and especially curling irons, it’s like my hair is so stubborn and gets loose very quickly – I literally step away from the house and it’s already completely straight! I feel so sad because of it because I really like wave hair but I guess I have to accept that we are not meant to be. If I have to blow-dry it and I’m at home, sometimes I use a heat protection spray, but I am not a fan of alcohol which is to be found in great amounts in products of this type. This one from Avon* I have chosen because it does not contain it so I use in the rare events of exposing my hair to high temperatures.

Izlaganje toplini

Oils and treatments

I have to say that often I don’t have the time to do any sort of treatments or having coconut oil (or some other kind of cold-pressed oil) in my hair for hours anymore, which is something I have done before, back in my student days. Now I prefer to have a tiny amount of oil on the ends of my hair after washing it, and that’s it! But to be honest, I feel so insecure about deciding the quantity of an oily product to put on my hair. Why? Because I made myself traumatised in a few instances when I wanted to have nice hair for some events, but instead I made it so greasy like I had completely washed it in an oil bath :/ So the safest thing for me is to use a small amount and distribute it only to the ends. I used to use a silicon oil from Avon before and it was terrific, and one from Pantene, and today I use Afrodita Argan oil* or their 10-in-1 serum*.

Ulja i uljani tretmani

That would be my point of view and tips how to keep your hair healthy, I hope my long story has helped you at least one bit. And I would just like to add that with this care I cut my hair once a year, just the ends, but to be honest maybe I could do it twice a year. What are your hair care routines and how much do you attend its needs?

Malo mi čak i fale 😀

      • Mare

Otopinu pantenola, tj. rastvor, kupujem u BiH, 3 KM (12 kn). Kod nas ga nigdje nisam uspjela naći.
